A foodie’s guide to Dr Junger’s Clean detox: part 1

It was time to take a stand.  After suffering from a consistent and severe bout of acne (for those of you who may protest this fact trust me when I confess that my face hides under many layers of very good foundation) for 8 months I knew I needed to do something drastic.  Particularly since two trips to the dermatologist’s office offered no viable solutions, only medicine that exacerbated my symptoms further.

Then a colleague from the office introduced a concept that initially sounded absurd: a 21 day detox that calls for 2 liquid meals a day and a solid meal during lunch according to Clean program-approved recipes.  The detox program, devised by Dr. Junger, is detailed in his bestselling book Clean which explains how toxins affects our bodies and are often the culprit of our skin problems, allergies, fatigue and other chronic health issues.  Dr. Junger’s explanations and case studies piqued my interest and by the time I was halfway through reading the book I was sold on the concept.  I’d like to say it’s because of good common sense but in truth… I was desperate.

As I write this I am on my 3rd week of the detox and am amazed by the results.  I won’t go so far as to say that my skin is emitting a goddess glow, but since the start of the detox I have not had a major breakout (whereas it was occurring daily previously) and the sluggishness I’ve often suffered from in the late afternoon has all but disappeared.  As if that wasn’t enough, I have been waking up before the rude blare of the alarm goes off.  In other words, I haven’t felt this good in a long while.

clean_detox_grilled_asparagusHow is a foodie managing a detox that calls for the elimination of coffee, dairy, butter and alcohol?  It has been surprisingly easy (for the most part).  For starters, the wicked caffeine withdrawal I expected to suffer from in the first few days never came.  And even though I crave Shrimpy’s soft shell crab burger daily, I have thoroughly enjoyed the meals – both liquid and solid. In the next few posts I will be sharing some of my favorite recipes and tips to “cope” with 21 days of clean eating.
